What is Instagram comment-to-DM automation?

Instagram comment-to-DM automation sends a direct message to everyone who comments a chosen keyword under a post or Reel. With APImage, you pick the Reel and the keyword. When someone comments it, your account replies privately with a short message and a button. When they tap the button, a second message delivers your link: the prompts and guide behind the video, a download, a product page or a discount code. It runs on Instagram's official messaging API and follows Instagram's rules: one private reply per comment, within seven days, and follow-up messages only after the person taps.

How to automate Instagram DMs from comments

Four steps. You do the first one once.

  1. 01

    Connect Instagram

Log in with your Instagram Business or Creator account. Instagram asks you to allow messages and comments. APImage never sees your password.

  2. 02

Pick a Reel and a keyword

Choose the post from your grid and the word people should comment, like PROMPTS. Reuse the same keyword on every Reel; each one sends its own link.

  3. 03

    Choose what they get

An APImage guide page with your prompts and step-by-step instructions, or any https link: a download, a product, a booking page.

  4. 04

    Go live

Every matching comment gets its DM within seconds, day and night. See comments, sends and taps for each Reel in one view.

Why comment-to-DM beats β€œlink in bio”

Link in bio

  • One link for every post you have ever made
  • Viewers leave the Reel and go looking for it
  • No idea which video someone came from
  • Comments only happen if people feel like it

Comment-to-DM

  • The right link for each Reel, every time
  • It lands in the inbox of the person who asked
  • Every request is a comment, which lifts the post
  • You see who asked, per video, and who tapped

Built for creators who share their process

Everything a creator needs to deliver what the video promised.

A link per Reel

The same keyword on ten Reels can send ten different resources. Each comment gets the one that belongs to its video.

Button-confirmed DMs

The first DM asks, the link follows the tap. That is how Instagram's messaging rules work, and it keeps your account in good standing.

Included

Hosted guide pages

Publish the prompts and steps behind a video on a clean page in minutes, with copy buttons for every prompt.

Questions creators ask

Is comment-to-DM automation allowed on Instagram?

Yes, when it goes through Instagram's official API, as APImage does. You connect with Instagram's own login, and messages only go to people who commented your keyword. Each comment gets one private reply, sent within seven days, and the link follows only after the person taps the button, which is how Instagram's messaging rules are designed. Instagram can still restrict accounts that break its Community Guidelines, so keep the messages honest and useful.

Do I need an Instagram Business account?

You need a professional account, Business or Creator. Switching is free in the Instagram app under Settings, then Account type and tools. Personal accounts cannot use Instagram's messaging API.

What counts as a message?

Each direct message sent counts as one: the first DM after a comment, and the second DM after the person taps the button. So one comment that goes all the way uses two messages. Optional public replies under the comment are not counted, and a message that could not be delivered is not counted.

What happens after 1,000 messages on the free plan?

New comments are no longer answered until the next calendar month. Anyone who already tapped the button still gets their link, so no conversation is left hanging. Paid plans include more messages and more accounts.

Can different Reels send different links?

Yes. Each automation is tied to one Reel or post and a keyword, so PROMPTS under one video can send that video's guide while PROMPTS under the next sends a different one.

Does it work on regular posts and carousels?

Yes. Any post or Reel on the connected account can have an automation. Comments on Stories and Lives are not supported.

Can it also reply publicly under the comment?

Optionally. You can add a short public reply such as "Sent you a DM". It is off by default.

How is this different from ManyChat?

ManyChat is a general chat-marketing platform for building multi-step conversations across several messaging channels. APImage does one job for creators: delivering the prompts, guides and links behind your videos, with hosted guide pages and the AI studio that made the video in the same account. If you need branching chat flows, a dedicated chat platform will do more.

Does APImage read my direct messages?

Instagram notifies connected apps of incoming messages as part of the messaging permission. APImage uses those notifications only to recognize button taps and confirm delivery, and does not store their content. See the privacy policy for details.
